Experience: An Online Continuing Education Case

I've been reading few interesting blogs about librarians and what their work is in this field. Examples of good blogs are theshiftedlibrarian.com or libraryclips.blogsome.com and today I just 'discover' techessence.info and one of the authors wrote a post that brings our attention to something all professionals in Education need it and lack of most of the times. It's the professional development and the advantages of continuous education programs.

Meredith Farkas, share with us how hard is for him to find time and schedule a continuing education advancement. Being a Professor or a plain educator requires lot of dedication time, it's not only the time you have to 'speak' in class but the reading and research it takes for you to be updated and on top your subjects.

This is the time when reading blogs needs to be graduated and simplified; setting time for reading books is extremely hard. Could it the reason less and less young readers find pleasure in flipping the book's sheets? Continuing education is the key. As for librarians he mentions two cases of professional development: Learning 2.0 and Five Weeks to a Social Library.

Those are their cases, I wonder how can regular teachers get updated on the change of trends in technology in the classrooms, new pedagogical conceptions, efficient methodologies for each subject and comprehensive understanding of web 2.0 My take is all teachers need to create social networks that point to one single objective: Get a better educational system.

When I just finished my studies in the university I just to go to almost every seminar, course or anything that will make my career as important as I thought it should be. However, after years I can barely assist to anything that it's not online and then, again I have to say you can keep up with your professional development at your own peace even when you can catch up things as quick as many would love to do it.

Old School: Catching Up Super Fast Machines

This is a great post and you will need a couple of minutes to read and understand the magnitude of such a powerful projection into thirty years now.

Learning should be an invitation, not a mandate. The question is how to make our invitees confortabel and willing to comprenhend valuable information.

Edublogs.org is the place for you to start a blog !

edubloggers.org

Edublogs.org was launched and as any start up the beginning was kind of slow, but as for right now is one of the best places to open a blog (free hosted). This is a niche dedicated for educators and all related matters; however there are not restrictions as for who can open a free blog. We’ve already made a reservation that can be seen in here but being this an educational blog we would like to recommend all teachers to open their blogs just here at Edublogers.org. What are the advantages? They just launched the Forums Feature which is generating a lot of buzz because this will change the approach many teachers were having while hosting their blogs in edublogs.org; now they are going to be able to attract student and not only make them open an account but get them to participate in any issue that will be showed in a particular forum. Isn’t that great, when we all know students enjoy spending time online?

These are some reasons why you should open an account in this Wordpress platform service:

1. Experiment with contemporary, customizable themes.
2. Simply embed videos, podcasts, images and a whole lot more.
3. Import from other blogging sites – or export back to them.
4. Great support and community.
5. These are not just blogs you know… it's a Wordpress technology.
6. It’s not (just) the technology, it’s the pedagogy too.

While you click away, please, feel free to drop any comments whether you know a better place to host free blogs in an educational commitment. Enjoy!

Hillary Thinks: MacCain Will 'Gut Obama Like A Fish'

One of the things I hate about politics is that in this arena everything is acceptable. Today I saw a magazine where the subtitle said 'How Hillary will win' this democratic nomination and immediately it pointed it out, is better to ask 'How Hillary lose' the nomination?. All media is talking about how all the political machinery of the Clinton's has failed, many reports even say the same advisers are not happy about themselves because they don't know (they weren't prepared) to fight the Obama phenomenon. Just today is circulating a picture that nobody knows how come it hit the net, surprisingly now the Hillary feels behind even in Texas where Hispanics that regularly were loyal to Clinton are jumping ship according to an interview to a member of Davila's family over the south of Texas, he had pictures showing in his terms, that one third were white, the other third Hispanic and the remaining black. In Ohio, workers need answers and they think the Clintons already had their opportunity and now it's time for a change, no more outsourcing jobs from Ohio manufacturing plants.

CBS and the NYT poll found Obama ahead of Hillary nationally, 16-points ahead. Now they want to stop Obama telling Americans that cultural heritage is bad. Everyone already knows the spiritual origins of Obama ancestors, Muslim. So, what is wrong about to wear something is part of their spirituality and culture. What American living in another country can be diminished just because he/she likes to celebrate Thanksgiving in the very American way?

Why they don't show and comment about The Clinton Chronicles? I want to save your time, just click the video and make your very own conclusions.

eBlogTemplates Wants To Convert Wordpress Themes

This is our gratitude for the person who's made this blog not only look nice but very professional (not money down). eBlogTemplates is holding a contest from now until March 16th, 2008. As the post says, all bloggers are in call just make sure your Wordpress selection are under Open Source and it is a in a blog-style format.

After finding what you think is the winning template, paste the template name and url where it can be demoed and downloaded from in the comments box below. Make sure there’s not already the same template suggested otherwise the person who first submitted it will only be considered. If you’ve designed your own template feel free to suggest it as well. Just make sure it’s really cool and high quality otherwise it might be removed from the list

So, join in David W Cowhill and help him help others to get a nice Wordpress theme converted into Blogger code. We have plenty of time to participate and choose among those thousands of nice looking Wordpress designs.

**Update**

I've noticed many hits are coming to this page, looking for templates to be switched into Wordpress. Here a good place to place such a requisition, it's not for free but very, very affordable.

A shake up before we fall asleep

I've reading lots lately and no time to publish on this beautiful place, our blog. The american politics is becoming so interesting as to see who's going to compete for the White House position, next to McCain. It seems to me the political machinery from Clinton's family is lost. At this point, is Obama who's the front runner; I might be wrong but let's see what happens after March 4th.

In the mean time why not give it a try. Entrecard allowed to meet very interesting bloggers at the same time we've got some visibility on the net.

Bluetooth and WiFi Effects On Phone Bridges

ISV PenandMouse As we wrote yesterday, tendencies in the near future are mobile and can be easily articulated with gadgets as the one you are watching on this post, the ISV PenandMouse [http://www.redferret.net/?p=10013]. You must be heard news about the free Wi-Fi service in Starbucks and other places in the States and this will be complete when this year a new chip, that includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules integrated in one, will make an appearance in gadgets and a broad range of devices by the middle of next year. Sizlopedia brigs the information and we quote which will be the benefits:
This means a consumer can use a mobile phone equipped with a Bluetooth wireless headset to make a call while using the same phone to simultaneously check information on the Internet via a WLAN network - without experiencing interference.

Also, by reducing two chips into one, will not only reduce the cost of devices, it will have effect on the power consumption as well, thus further enhancing battery live.

If this are the tendencies not only in technology but in the applications to the Higher Education then we should be looking out the development of the Phone Bridges considered as platform. Learningalliances.net makes a roundup of most platforms used by its effect and we think those might be used also in the eclassrooms, considering that bridge platforms can send "email announcements scheduling a call and make a recording of a call and serve up the recording to people who didn’t make it to the call."

The iPhone its only the beginning and while more and more students are having not only one cell phone, it's time to start searching for immediate application of mobile technology in the classrooms and as an instant medium of communication.

Are you using in any ways the phone bridges in the academic spectrum you are actually working?

Six Emerging Technologies For Higher Education

The New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) jointly had produced The 2008 Horizon Report (pdf) which describes six areas of emerging technology that will have significant impact on higher
Education. This is:

a five-year qualitative research effort that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative expression within learning-focused organizations

The 2008 report focuses on the following topics and whether you are an educator or parent you should read the pdf we just linked to:

1. Grassroots Video; today anyone can capture, edit, and share short video clips, using inexpensive equipment and free or nearly free software.

2. Collective Intelligence; emerging collective intelligence (explicit and implicit).

3. Social Operating Systems; using experimentation we'll continue the organization of the social networks around people, rather than around content.

4. Collaboration Webs; ownership of collaborative work and certification of authorship will have to solved.

5. Mobile Broadband; cell mobile distribution of content will grow.

6. Data Mashups; co-creation, mashups, remixes, and instant self-publication are being juxtaposed as regular data (Web 2.0)

Digital Literacy Skills: 27 Student Posted Questions to Be Answered!

It's being a while since we don't post about really related matters to this page and today we just found a new post written by the well known Wesley Fryer, where he writes from his own experiences what it means 'don't talk to strangers' and 'don't reveal personal information' and how this is related to digital citizenship.

It's no wonder he already answered seven of these questions but still we have 2 more to go. Are any of you fellow educators able or interested in answer at least one more of them?

I had picked only those relevant for us, but surely you can picked all list at techLearning.com

- Do you think the internet will ever be safe?
- How do you know if a person is safe enough to talk to online?
- What is the most difficult computer problem you have ever encountered?
- When do you know that you are being a bad digital citizen?

Challenging question for a regular parent but so easy answered for people who spent quite enough time online and knows the etiquette and procedures to follow under determined circumstances. Do not forget those question were brought by students, so they need or are in need of answers.

What it'll be your answer for any of my picked questions?

Photoshop: Brushes And Useful Resources

I won't provide detailed information here about all the Photoshop Brushes but I would like to introduce to you a very resourceful blog and webpage where you can find all (or almost all) information about graphics and illustration explained in a easy way in tutorial and how-to explanations that even the inexperienced can catch it in a fly.

Photoshop is so far, the most popular graphics editing program. Produced by Adobe, its latest version is CS3. Having hundreds of plug-ins, brushes and gradient packs, Photoshop is increasing in utility every day.

Why am I writing about graphics-illustrations.com? The answer is the picture below.

Entrecard Designs Silvia is the person behind all this work, she's Croatian and before establishing graphic-illustrations. com she was writing for blogspot hosting blogs but even when she's concentrated in her page she also holds two more pages Blogffiliate, Squidoo Photoshop Brushes and BSilvia.com where she continues working with Photoshop graphics (over 600 dollars you might need to get it) and where tallking about her home country, she points out:

...for many Croatians it’s just not easy to go to Croatia, spend time to find the old roots. And even if you go there for a few days the weather is lousy, it rains or it’s too foggy to make a nice shot of your ancestors place.

Silvia was holding a contest for Entrecard Cards and still is offering for free some over here. And that's how we met Silvia and how she was able to design some Entrecards, as that on top right of our page.

She's all into business but we haven't paid a buck and we are not being paid for this review. It's the quality of her job and the social networking which compel us to write about Silvia. She's updating her page every Monday and Thursday, so stay tuned and in the mean time check out her newest Valentine Photo Contest!

Why your Technorati Rank Is Also Important

I am struggling to comprehend the policy of ranking in Technorati, but same as Google PR and Alexa that is something we, as bloggers or webmasters can control. This page was a very respectable suited in Technorati with a rank over 230, then it was degraded to 110 and as for now it's in 55. I don't remember doing nothing wrong as far as I had erased some blogs that I really liked but they didn't honor me with a fave back. Is it a good reason to be degraded that far?

Now, I do know Technorati doesn't rank you high if your content is not good enough and keep a fresh posting policy. I am working so hard in offer this quality standard posts but I would also like to boost my Technorati rank. "A good rank in Technorati also helps you more in selling links or banners in your blog. That also goes to sponsored reviews ordered from you. Not only more links/banners selling or reviews, but for more price" says Rose from roseatemarketingtips.com and we do agree 100%. That's why every person who has a page or blog should be taking care of their traffic. Why is it worth to keep writing if nobody is going to read it, anyway?

So, please let's help each other to bring our rank up where it should be. And if you know what I did wrong to deserve such a treatment drop me a line.

Let’s Bring Up Our Technorati Rank Now! [as 8/03/2008]

DDoS: Hosting and Spanish Bloggers Being Affected by Persistent Attacks

You will find many bloggers who write and promote business and adverstisement in serious way and with lawful procedures but what's happening with a innumerable Spanish weblogs is tough and the law needs to intervene and work to sanction these kind of attacks, these always heated 'fishing' affecting our normal lives and properly established business.

The original post hung in Genbeta.com was: "Do you want to know by who you've been not admitted to the MSN, so don't give out your password to strangers". The post was written in Spanish and because of the attacks Genbeta is down but you still can see it in Google cached page.

Our concern has geared because the note we've got it from a well established blogger and professor in Spain, Enrique Edans. As right now, his page is not accessible and in his last post he's reporting the same issue with weblogssl.com where he claims to have some small shares. This is an excerpt of his post:

Recently, the entry began to be well positioned in Google, and the company received a number of threaten e-mails, asking them the withdrawal of the content under the threat of a DDoS attack. The threat has proved to be true, as of last Sunday, Genbeta began to suffer attacks of this kind which have been rising in intensity to affect every part of the data center, owned by NTT Communications Europe. The analysis of this attacks has already allowed to get enough information that I can not provide in order not to jeopardize investigations on the matter, this is a matter related to the lumpen stratum and the most nasty and dirty part on the web.

What they're doing is called an attack DDoS and for those not familiar with this terminology it's a way to attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users by generating an overload of traffic which on time prevents the site from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Microsoft is taking actions and for more of this thread , please visit the Spanish blogosphere or keep track of events through Technorati.

Poincare's Geometry

I haven't posted these last two weeks for personal reasons and matter of time. I apologize for being absent all this period and Tonnet wants to reassure you Education and Tech has long live. Here a math thought, just to start heating up back again.

Three mathematicians are shown a cube and asked to describe what they see. The first a geometer, says, "I see a cube." The second is a graph theorist . She ventures, "I see eight points, connected by twelve edges." The third, a topologist, declares, "I see a sphere" The joke encapsulates the worldview of mathematicians belonging to different disciplines. Everybody sees what he or she wants to see and it's blind to much else. Topologists are blind to angles, distances and the exact shape of the objects of their interest.- George G. Szpiro
